Cloud Architect Job Description

The Cloud Architect develops and maintains the enterprise cloud architecture, creating blueprints and patterns for application modernisation, migration and new deployments. The role involves assessing current state environments, producing migration plans and defining operational models to support continuous delivery and stable production operations.

In day to day work the Cloud Architect partners with cross functional teams to ensure designs meet non functional requirements such as availability, scalability, security and cost control. The role requires clear communication of architecture choices, risks and benefits to technical and non technical stakeholders and active participation in technical reviews and governance boards.

The Cloud Architect is expected to promote best practice adoption, mentor engineers, and contribute to automation and infrastructure standardisation. The role includes monitoring architecture performance, driving improvements and ensuring documentation and runbooks are maintained for operational teams.

Cloud Architect: Duties and Responsibilities

  • Define and document enterprise cloud architecture principles, standards and reference designs.
  • Translate business requirements into scalable, secure and cost effective cloud solutions.
  • Develop migration strategies and roadmaps for moving workloads to the cloud.
  • Design for resilience, high availability and disaster recovery across cloud environments.
  • Collaborate with stakeholders to ensure architecture meets compliance and regulatory needs.
  • Lead architecture reviews, provide technical guidance and approve solution designs.
  • Promote security best practice and integrate security controls in architecture design.
  • Optimise cloud cost through architecture choices and capacity planning.
  • Define automation and infrastructure as code approaches to improve repeatability and deployment speed.
  • Establish monitoring, observability and performance baselines for cloud services.
  • Produce clear documentation, diagrams and runbooks for operational teams.
  • Mentor engineering teams and foster skills development in cloud engineering practices.
  • Participate in vendor evaluation and procurement where required, providing technical requirements.

Cloud Architect: Requirements and Qualifications

  • Degree in computer science, engineering or a related technical discipline, or equivalent experience.
  • Minimum of five years experience designing and delivering cloud solutions in complex environments.
  • Proven experience in architecture design, migration planning and solution delivery.
  • Strong understanding of networking, security, identity and access management principles.
  • Experience with automation, scripting and infrastructure as code methodologies.
  • Familiarity with CI CD practices and operational support models for cloud services.
  • Ability to produce clear architecture artefacts, diagrams and technical documentation.
  • Excellent stakeholder engagement and communication skills, with experience presenting to senior leadership.
  • Analytical approach to problem solving and experience assessing trade offs and risks.
  • Knowledge of compliance, data protection and governance considerations for cloud deployments.
  • Track record of mentoring technical teams and leading cross functional initiatives.
  • Relevant cloud or architecture certifications are desirable but not essential.
