The IT Director defines and drives the IT strategy, aligning technology initiatives with business aims and regulatory requirements. Working with senior stakeholders across the organisation, the IT Director sponsors major programmes, manages third-party relationships and oversees the IT budget and procurement processes. IT Director: Duties and Responsibilities

  • Develop and implement the IT strategy to support organisational objectives and long term planning.
  • Provide leadership and direction to IT teams, fostering a performance driven and collaborative culture.
  • Establish and maintain IT governance, policies and standards to manage risk and ensure compliance.
  • Oversee the design and maintenance of enterprise architecture to ensure scalability and interoperability.
  • Manage IT budgets, capital expenditure and procurement to deliver value and cost control.
  • Lead major IT programmes and project portfolios, ensuring on time and on budget delivery.
  • Develop and maintain vendor and supplier relationships, including contract negotiation and performance management.
  • Ensure robust information security, data protection and business continuity arrangements are in place and tested.
  • Drive service improvement through metrics, reporting and adoption of best practice service management.
  • Work with senior leadership to identify opportunities for digital transformation and operational optimisation.
  • Ensure regulatory and compliance requirements affecting IT are understood and met.
  • Build capability through recruitment, development and succession planning for the IT function.
  • Provide clear, timely reporting to executive leadership and stakeholders on IT performance and risks.
  • Advise on technical implications of business initiatives and support decision making with evidence based analysis.

IT Director: Requirements and Qualifications

  • Degree or equivalent qualification in computer science, information systems, engineering or related discipline.
  • Extensive senior IT leadership experience, typically 10 years or more, including responsibility for strategy and delivery.
  • Proven experience of developing and implementing IT strategy and enterprise architecture.
  • Strong understanding of information security, data protection and business continuity principles.
  • Experience managing significant IT budgets and supplier contracts, with commercial awareness.
  • Demonstrable track record of delivering large scale projects and programmes successfully.
  • Excellent stakeholder engagement and communication skills at executive and operational levels.
  • Competence in risk management, governance frameworks and regulatory compliance relevant to IT.
  • Strong leadership skills with experience building and developing high performing teams.
  • Analytical and problem solving ability, with experience using data to inform decisions and measure outcomes.
  • Experience of cloud and hybrid environments, integration and modernisation initiatives.
  • Professional certifications in IT management, security or project management are desirable but not essential.
