The Key Holder ensures the premises are opened and closed securely at designated times, manages access control, and acts as the first point of contact in the absence of managers. The role supports operational continuity by supervising shifts, maintaining routine checks, and ensuring the site meets organisational standards for safety, security and customer service.

Key Holders work under direction from store or site managers but are expected to exercise sound judgement when acting alone. The purpose of the role is to protect assets, enable efficient service delivery and provide a reliable presence during critical periods of operation.

Key Holders perform opening and closing duties that include unlocking and locking entrances, activating and deactivating alarms, and conducting a visual inspection of the premises. They are responsible for securing keys and maintaining accurate key control records, ensuring only authorised personnel have access. The role requires monitoring of safety and security issues and prompt reporting of incidents or defects to management.

In addition to security tasks, Key Holders support the daily running of the site. This includes supervising colleagues during shifts, handling cash and reconciliation tasks where required, overseeing deliveries and stock-handling activities, and maintaining standards of presentation and health and safety. They must communicate clearly with managers, staff and customers and escalate concerns following established procedures.

Key Holder: Duties and Responsibilities

  • Open and close premises according to set schedules and procedures.
  • Secure, store and manage keys and access devices with strict control.
  • Activate and deactivate alarm systems and perform security checks.
  • Conduct visual inspections of premises for safety, security and damage.
  • Supervise staff on shift and allocate routine tasks to maintain service levels.
  • Handle cash, complete till reconciliations and report discrepancies.
  • Receive, check and process deliveries, reporting shortages or damage.
