The Lead QA Engineer leads the design and implementation of test strategies across multiple products or modules, balancing risk-based testing with efficient use of automation and manual techniques. They collaborate closely with product managers and engineering leads to define acceptance criteria, plan releases and ensure testability throughout the development cycle.

In addition to hands-on testing and test automation oversight, the role includes managing defect lifecycle, producing meaningful quality metrics and reports, and coordinating environment and release readiness. The lead is expected to coach and develop QA team members, promote best practice processes and drive improvements to reduce defects and shorten feedback loops.

Working in an iterative delivery environment, the Lead QA Engineer will prioritise testing work based on business impact, manage dependencies with cross-functional teams and ensure regulatory or compliance requirements are considered in test planning where applicable.

Lead QA Engineer: Duties and Responsibilities

  • Define and maintain a comprehensive QA strategy and test approach aligned with product objectives.
  • Create and review test plans, test cases and acceptance criteria for new features and releases.
  • Lead and mentor a team of QA engineers, setting objectives and supporting professional development.
  • Drive the adoption of efficient test practices, including appropriate levels of automation and manual testing.
  • Coordinate end-to-end testing activities for releases, including integration and regression testing.
  • Manage defect triage and resolution workflows in collaboration with development teams.
  • Define and report quality metrics to stakeholders to inform release decisions and continuous improvement.
  • Ensure test environments and data are provisioned and maintained for reliable test execution.
  • Plan and oversee performance, security and reliability testing where required by the product context.
  • Work with product owners to translate requirements into clear, testable acceptance criteria.
  • Advise on testability and quality implications of design and architecture choices.
  • Identify process gaps and lead initiatives to improve defect prevention and detection rates.
  • Support release planning and post-release validation, including incident investigation and root cause analysis.

Lead QA Engineer: Requirements and Qualifications

  • Bachelor degree in computer science, engineering or a related discipline or equivalent practical experience.
  • Significant experience in software quality assurance with a track record of hands-on testing and automation.
  • Proven experience in a lead or senior QA role, including team coaching and task allocation.
  • Strong understanding of software development lifecycles and testing methodologies including risk-based testing.
  • Practical knowledge of test automation design, scripting and maintenance principles.
  • Experience defining and using quality metrics to drive decision making and improve outcomes.
  • Ability to manage complex testing across integrations and multiple environments.
  • Excellent analytical, problem solving and attention to detail.
  • Good written and verbal communication skills for technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Experience working in Agile delivery teams and participating in sprint planning and retrospectives.
  • Familiarity with performance, security and reliability testing concepts and practices.
  • Proven ability to prioritise work and make trade-off decisions under time constraints.
  • Relevant certifications in testing or quality assurance are desirable but not essential.
