The Management Accountant is responsible for the end to end preparation of management accounts and associated analysis within defined reporting cycles. This includes compiling income statements, balance sheets and cash flow summaries, reconciling key accounts and preparing clear commentary on variances against budget and prior periods. The role requires close liaison with operational teams to ensure accurate recording of transactions and to support monthly and quarterly forecasts.

The post-holder will be expected to support the budgeting process, produce scenario modelling and provide regular reporting to finance leadership and business managers. Strong attention to detail, adherence to accounting policies and the ability to present financial information in a concise and accessible way to non-finance colleagues are key expectations. Management Accountant: Duties and Responsibilities

  • Prepare monthly management accounts, including income statement, balance sheet and cash flow items.
  • Analyse variances to budget and prior periods and produce explanatory commentary for management.
  • Lead the month end close processes and ensure timely completion of reconciliations and accruals.
  • Prepare and maintain budgets, forecasts and long range financial models.
  • Provide financial analysis to support business decisions, pricing, projects and cost control initiatives.
  • Reconcile key balance sheet accounts and investigate reconciling items.
  • Monitor and report on performance indicators and operational metrics.
  • Support monthly and quarterly reporting packs for senior management and stakeholders.
  • Work with operational teams to validate transactions and ensure appropriate accounting treatment.
  • Assist with financial planning cycles, including sensitivity analysis and scenario planning.
  • Maintain and improve internal controls, policies and accounting procedures.
  • Support external and internal audit requests and provide required documentation.
  • Deliver ad hoc financial modelling, cost benefit analysis and project finance support.
  • Contribute to process improvements to enhance accuracy and timeliness of management information.

Management Accountant: Requirements and Qualifications

  • Qualified accountant or part qualified with recognised professional accountancy body such as CIMA, ACCA, ACA or AAT.
  • Proven experience in a management accounting role with responsibility for management accounts and reporting.
  • Strong understanding of accounting principles and financial controls, including UK GAAP and IFRS where applicable.
  • Experience preparing budgets, forecasts and performing variance analysis.
