The Nurse Manager supervises day to day nursing operations, ensuring patient care is coordinated and delivered in line with clinical protocols and regulatory expectations. They develop and maintain local policies, oversee risk management activities and ensure records and documentation meet required standards.

In this role the manager will plan and allocate workload, manage staff rotas and support recruitment and induction of new staff. They will monitor clinical outcomes and lead quality improvement initiatives to enhance patient experience and clinical effectiveness.

The Nurse Manager is expected to collaborate with multidisciplinary teams, communicate effectively with patients and relatives and represent the nursing service in meetings and governance forums. The post involves occasional involvement in incident investigations and reporting duties related to patient safety.

Nurse Manager: Duties and Responsibilities

  • Lead, supervise and support nursing staff to deliver high quality patient care
  • Plan and manage staff rotas to maintain safe staffing levels and skill mix
  • Oversee recruitment, induction and ongoing professional development of team members
  • Conduct performance appraisals, manage performance issues and support career development
  • Ensure compliance with clinical policies, local procedures and regulatory standards
  • Monitor patient care outcomes and lead quality improvement projects
  • Manage incidents, complaints and near misses in accordance with reporting procedures
  • Participate in risk assessments and implement actions to mitigate identified risks
  • Maintain accurate clinical records and ensure confidentiality of patient information

Nurse Manager: Requirements and Qualifications

  • Registered nurse with current registration with the relevant professional body
  • Diploma or degree in nursing or equivalent clinical qualification
  • Proven clinical experience in acute or community nursing settings
  • Experience in a supervisory or team leader role, with evidence of staff management
  • Knowledge of clinical governance, patient safety and quality improvement methodologies
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to influence and negotiate
  • Ability to manage workload, prioritise tasks and make sound clinical decisions
  • Experience of conducting performance appraisals and supporting staff development
  • Familiarity with healthcare documentation and basic IT skills for reporting and rostering
  • Current basic life support certification or equivalent clinical competencies
  • Ability to work flexibly, including shift patterns and occasional on-call duties
