The Senior System Administrator plans, implements and supports core infrastructure changes and operational processes. Responsibilities include systems provisioning, patch management, performance tuning, backup and recovery assurance and routine maintenance to ensure continuity of service. The role involves working to agreed change management and release processes and contributing to capacity planning and monitoring strategies.

The post holder will manage incidents and service requests to meet defined service level targets, provide root cause analysis for major incidents and propose corrective actions. Collaboration with IT colleagues, stakeholders and third parties is required to ensure integrations are robust and that business requirements are translated into stable technical solutions. The role also involves leading small projects and improvements and mentoring more junior administrators to raise team capability.

Senior System Administrator: Duties and Responsibilities

  • Manage daily operation of servers, storage and related infrastructure to maintain availability and performance.
  • Apply system patches, updates and configuration changes in line with approved change control processes.
  • Monitor system health, capacity and performance and act on alerts to prevent service disruption.
  • Investigate and resolve incidents, perform root cause analysis and document corrective actions.
  • Design and implement backup and recovery strategies and perform recovery testing.
  • Implement and maintain security controls to protect systems and data in line with policy.
  • Automate repetitive tasks and workflows to improve consistency and reduce manual effort.
  • Plan and execute upgrades, migrations and hardware refreshes with minimal business impact.

  • Proven experience managing server and storage infrastructure, including patching and lifecycle activities.
  • Strong understanding of networking fundamentals, routing, switching and connectivity principles.
  • Experience of backup, recovery and business continuity processes and testing.
  • Knowledge of security principles and controls relevant to infrastructure administration.
  • Practical experience of automation and scripting to support operational tasks.
  • Experience with monitoring, alerting and capacity management practices.
  • Familiarity with change management, incident management and problem management processes.
