Shift Leader Job Profile

The Shift Leader is responsible for overseeing day-to-day activities on a shift, maintaining productivity and quality standards, and ensuring that health and safety and company procedures are followed. This role provides immediate leadership to a team, allocating work, monitoring progress and stepping in to resolve operational issues.

The purpose of the role is to maintain continuity of operations between shifts, support continuous improvement, coach team members and provide accurate shift reporting to senior supervisors or operations managers.

Shift Leaders manage the delivery of work within their shift by allocating tasks, managing resources and monitoring performance against targets. They are expected to implement standard operating procedures, conduct routine checks on quality and compliance, and ensure that team members operate safely and productively. Shift Leaders act as the first point of contact for operational issues and are responsible for escalating matters that require higher level intervention.

Work is carried out in a live operational environment that may be fast paced and subject to changing priorities. Candidates must be able to make quick, informed decisions, maintain accurate records including handover notes, and communicate effectively with colleagues across shifts and departments. The role typically requires regular attendance outside standard office hours, including early mornings, evenings or weekends, depending on business needs.

Shift Leader: Duties and Responsibilities

  • Supervise and coordinate the activities of the shift team to meet production or service targets.
  • Assign tasks and manage workload distribution based on skills and priorities.
  • Monitor performance and quality, conducting spot checks and corrective actions as required.
  • Conduct thorough shift handovers and maintain accurate operational records and logs.
  • Enforce health and safety procedures and ensure all team members follow safe working practices.
  • Identify, report and escalate operational issues or equipment faults to maintenance or management.
  • Provide on-the-job coaching, training and feedback to support staff development and competency.
  • Implement process improvements and suggest efficiencies to supervisors or managers.
  • Manage absence, lateness and temporary staffing adjustments within the shift.
  • Ensure stock, materials and consumables are available and report shortages promptly.
  • Support incident investigation and corrective action processes when required.
  • Maintain high standards of housekeeping and compliance with regulatory requirements.
  • Prepare and submit shift reports, performance data and quality records to the next shift or line manager.
  • Foster a collaborative team environment and address minor disciplinary or conduct matters within remit.

Shift Leader: Requirements and Qualifications

  • Previous experience in a supervisory or team leader role within an operational setting.
  • Demonstrable leadership skills with the ability to motivate and manage a diverse team.
  • Good written and verbal communication skills for clear handovers and reporting.
  • Practical knowledge of health and safety regulations relevant to the workplace.
  • Strong problem solving and decision making skills under time pressure.
  • Basic numeracy and record keeping skills to manage performance metrics and logs.
  • Ability and willingness to work shift patterns including early, late or weekend shifts.
  • Experience of implementing or following standard operating procedures and quality checks.
  • Competence in coaching, training or developing operational staff.
  • Attention to detail and commitment to maintaining standards and compliance.
  • Ability to escalate issues appropriately and liaise with maintenance or management.
  • Relevant vocational qualifications or certifications are desirable but not essential.
